Event Description: Rogaine stands for Rugged Outdoor Group Adventure Involving Navigation and Endurance. Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation. Rogaining involves both route planning and navigation between control points using only a map and compass. No GPS, pedometer, or electronic aid allowed (Except a watch for timing) In a rogaine, individuals or teams of 2-5 people, strategically choose which control points to visit with the intent of maximizing their score in the allotted amount of time. Teamwork, endurance, competition and an appreciation for the natural environment are features of the sport. Rogaining is for people of all ages and levels of fitness; from elite athletes to families with young children.
Directions:
We will supply you with a waterproof map with around thirty checkpoints plotted in the woods, hidden from view of the trails. Your challenge is to get as many points as possible in your allotted time frame (3 or 6 hours) and get back to the start/finish line before times up! Control Points may be gathered in any order. The point value of a captured control point is rounded down to the tens digit, for example #26 is worth 2 points, 29 is worth 2 points, #32 is worth 3 points, # 56 is worth 5 points, etc... A control points value is based on it’s distance and difficulty to find The team or individual with the most points wins. In the event of a tie, the shortest time wins. Get back on time because for every minute past the 3pm finish time, one point will be deducted from your score. At 3:30pm you will be disqualified! So don’t be late! The terrain in the Turkey Springs area is rolling open woodlands with an extensive trail system, so bushwhacking will be minimal, but if you don’t want scratches, long pants and sleeves are recommended. Each team or individual should have at least one whistle for Emergencies. It will be monsoon season, so rain gear is recommended, a blue bird day can quickly turn to thunderstorms. Don’t forget a compass or two!
