June 21 - Watch the sun rise over the San Juans this first day of summer and discuss how the ancients may have lived and why they celebrated the solstice. Summer solstice is the longest day of the year with sunrise occurring the farthest north on the horizon of the entire year. This unique 2-3 hour event begins at the Sun Tower, a place not visited on our regular tours, and concludes at the Stone Basin, providing two viewing locations. Tickets are $15 and reservations are required. Ticket purchase is considered a donation and is non-refundable. The HWY 151 gate will be open from 5:00am-5:05am. Sunrise is at approximately 5:48am.

Chimney Rock National Monument Full Moon Program 6/22/2013

Watch the full moon rise at the Great House Pueblo site, learn about the Ancestral Puebloans, archaeoastronomy theories, area geology, and enjoy Native American flute melodies by Charles Martinez. This moon rise will not occur between the twin spires. Not recommended for children under the age of 12. Allow approximately 3 hrs for the entire program. Tickets are $15. Add $5 for an early tour of the Great Kiva Trail. Ticket purchase is considered a donation and is non-refundable. Bring flashlights, water (also for sale at the Visitor Center), cushions, and blankets or coats. Reservations are required.

Chimney Rock National Monument Night Sky Archaeoastronomy Program 7/5/2013

Chimney Rock's entertaining yet educational Night-Sky Archaeoastronomy Program includes a one-hour astronomy demonstration at the Visitor Center. Guests will learn about naked-eye astronomy of the Ancestral Puebloans and the solar system and universe. Then participants will drive to the upper mesa for approximately 1.5 hours of night-sky viewing through telescopes. Participants are advised to bring binoculars, water (also for sale at the Visitor Center), flashlights, and coats. The upper parking area is paved and wheelchair accessible, with restroom facilities. Reservations are required. Tickets are $15/adults and $7.50 for children 5-16 years of age. Ticket purchase is considered a donation and is non-refundable.

June 7 - The HWY 151 gate will close at 7:15pm; the opening program is scheduled from 7:30pm to 8:30pm; with viewing from 9:00pm to 10:45pm.

The premier racing event of Pagosa, in the pristine San Juan Mountains. Get the ultimate Pagosa Duathlon experience with epic single-track for the trail enthusiasts. The Full Duathlon is a 6-mile run, 14-mile mountain bike ride and the Half Duathlon is a 3-mile run, 8-mile bike. You can ‘du’ either race as a two-member relay team or take them on solo. For our young athletes, we have the Mini-Du with a 1 mile run, 2-mile ride.

Full Du: By 6/30= $35 7/1 to Race Day= $50

½-Du: By 6/30= $25 7/1 to Race Day= $40

Mini-Du: $10
All participants receive an official race t-shirt and post-race goodies. Special awards for the top 3 finishers.

The course consists of three legs: A cruiser bike ride (or other self-propelled method of transportation) and tour through downtown Pagosa Springs; a thong (that is to say-flip-flop) walk along the almost-world-famous Pagosa Springs Riverwalk and lastly, a tube float (or other flotation device) down the San Juan River. Following the race is our After-Party with live music, beer garden, tasty food and an awards ceremony. Win by posting the most "Average" time.

Take delight in finding the Pirate King's treasure while feasting on such delights as roast turkey legs, steak on a stake, fresh baked goods and much, much more! Friday-Saturday, 10am-8pm. Pagosa's Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership (GGP) hosts the Pagosa Environmental Film Festival. The Colorado Environmental Film Festival has concluded its 7th annual event in Golden, Colorado and has granted several hours of its highest quality environmental documentaries to the GGP. In addition to evening viewings in Pagosa's historic downtown theater, the Springs' hot water, and Centennial Park, the GGP will host hikes into the breath-taking beauty of Pagosa's backcountry, informal discussion groups, and a tour of Chimney Rock National Monument. All proceeds benefit the Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership.

This program consists of educational talks that focus on Chimney Rock National Monument. Participants will also enjoy Native American flute melodies by Charles Martinez. Come join us the third Sunday of the month, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. The program will be held in the upper parking area and will provide an experience for those who choose not to do the hiking tour or for anyone who wants to learn more about Chimney Rock. Guests for this event will arrive at 4:30, drive to the upper parking area, which is paved and has restrooms. There is some seating available, but guests will also be able to bring chairs. The program will end by 6:30. Because space is limited to 25, reservations are required. Tickets are $15 for adults, $7.50 for children 5-16 years of age. May 19, June 16, July 28, Aug 18, Sept 15

Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and the quest for the Holy Grail in song, Monty Python's Spamalot features "a chorus line of legless knights, men in tights (with legs), killer rabbits and sexy dancing divas." The production also promises "some of the most unforgettable musical numbers you will ever see in the theater on this evening!" Chimney Rock National Monument Puebloan Pottery Workshop 8/2/2013 - 8/4/2013

August 2-4 - Noted Potter Gregory Wood (website at http://www.ancientarts.org) leads participants to replicate Pueblo III Mesa Verde black-on-white, organically painted pottery. Participants will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of craftsmanship, design, and prehistoric technology required to create and fire pottery as the Ancestral Puebloans did. Learn to hand form, burnish, decorate, and trench kiln fire using only prehistoric methods. Prepaid advance reservations required, limited enrollment. The 3-day workshop takes place at Chimney Rock National Monument. Early reservations help us ensure this class will happen.
